License plate fun fact
The earliest American "license plates", dating from the early 1900s, were usually rudimentary, hand-painted boards, leather pieces, or iron tags made by vehicle owners themselves. Since automobiles were scarce and registration numbers low, these pre-state tags are universally considered rare and highly sought after by collectors.
