Where Are Vanity Plates Most Common?
Vanity plates are everywhere, but some places produce way more of them than others. Whether it's state culture, low fees, or a deep love of cars and self-expression, certain spots punch well above their weight when it comes to personalized plates. Here's a tour of where you're most likely to spot a great tag.
Virginia: The Vanity Plate Capital of America
Virginia is the undisputed king of vanity plates in the US. About one in six cars on Virginia roads carries a personalized plate, a per-capita rate that no other state comes close to matching. In fact, some of the creators of PL8FROG started their tagging journey in Virginia, inspired by the abundance of custom plates to enjoy. The state makes the process easy and affordable, and the culture around plate personalization runs deep. If you're tagging on the East Coast, Virginia is the jackpot.
California: A Paradise for Taggers
California might not top the per-capita charts, but with over 30 million registered vehicles, the sheer volume is unmatched anywhere. Add in the state's car culture, warm weather (more time outside = more chances to spot plates!), and love of self-expression, and you get an incredible density of creative plates.
TAHOEA4 is a perfect California plate: specific to a place and a car all in one shot. MURHICA is loud and proud. The California and San Francisco categories in our collection are a great place to see just how creative Golden State taggers get.
Montana and New Hampshire: Low Fees, High Creativity
Some states make vanity plates practically irresistible by keeping fees low. Montana and New Hampshire both offer personalized plates at prices that make it easy to say yes. New Hampshire's motto is "Live Free or Die" and that spirit absolutely carries through to plate culture. When the barrier to entry is low, people get creative fast.
Nevada and Florida: Showtime
Nevada and Florida share something important: a culture that rewards standing out. Las Vegas plates are in a category all their own, and Florida's mix of retirees, sun-seekers, and everyone else produces some of the most memorable plates in the country. TROUBLE is exactly the kind of plate that fits right in on a Florida highway. WETANGO has that same South Beach energy.
New York and Illinois: Big City, Big Plate Energy
Major cities generate major plate creativity. New York and Illinois both have strong vanity plate cultures, especially around their largest cities. BCUZICN (Because I Can!) is the perfect New York or Chicago attitude packed into 6 characters.
Around the World
Vanity plates are not just an American thing! The UK has a thriving private plate market where desirable letter combinations sell for thousands of pounds at auction. Australian states each run their own plate programs, and some wonderfully creative designs come out of New South Wales and Victoria. Canada, especially Ontario and British Columbia, has a vanity plate culture that rivals anything in the US.
Our collection is mostly American for now, but we love finding plates from around the world. Check out the location category for some of our best geographic finds, including an incredibly rare ARIZONA plate spotted in the wild.
What These Places Have in Common
The places with the most vanity plates tend to share a few things: strong car culture, a population with a little disposable income, and people who enjoy expressing themselves. Vanity plates are a micro-format for personality. Six to eight characters to say something about who you are, where you're from, or what makes you laugh. It's cheap art on wheels, and we are here for all of it.
